S/R: Felix Kwakye Ofosu’s Lavish Taste Contradicts His Claims on Government Austerity

On media platform recently, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, minster of communication at the Presidency has boldly declared that government expenditure has been significantly reduced under their administration. However, a closer look at both the government’s own budget and the personal spending habits of its appointees tells a very different story.

In what can only be described as a glaring contradiction, Felix Kwakye Ofosu was recently seen seated before two ultra-premium HUAWEI Mate X2 5G smartphones—each retailing at a staggering $11,809.00. When converted into Ghanaian cedis at the prevailing exchange rate, that equates to GHC 155,217.89 per phone, and a jaw-dropping GHC 310,435.78 for the pair.

This singular display of luxury exposes a troubling gap between rhetoric and reality. While Mr. Kwakye Ofosu champions narratives of fiscal discipline, such extravagance tells Ghanaians a completely different story. For a government that claims to be cutting costs and tightening public expenditure, such personal indulgence by a top appointee raises legitimate concerns about sincerity and accountability.

Even more troubling is the broader pattern this represents. Ghanaians continue to endure economic hardship, rising inflation, taxes, and public debt while those in power appear detached from the everyday realities of the citizens they serve. If appointees can afford to flaunt such opulence with impunity, how much more is being hidden from the public eye?

This is not just about two expensive phones. It’s about the growing perception of deception and hypocrisy within the corridors of power. When leaders say one thing and do another, public trust erodes—and rightly so. The people of Ghana deserve better: transparency, modesty, and a government that truly prioritises their wellbeing over personal luxury.

Until actions match words, statements about reduced government spending will ring hollow. The truth lies not in media soundbites, but in the spending choices that reveal the true priorities of those in charge.
